Born in 1983 in Penang, Nicol Ann David is a role model to the youths of Malaysia and around the world. She is
also one reason Malaysia is known in the international arena. She has played against squash players from
New Zealand, England, Australia, Holland and Egypt and has beaten many of them numerous times to clinch
championship titles. Today, she is ranked number one in the world.
She is the only squash player to have won the World Junior title twice. Nicol began playing squash at the age
of five, and began her formal training at the age of eight. Nicol was the youngest ever player to win the
Women’s World Junior Championships. The success came to her at the age of fifteen. Her first international
tournament and first international win was in 1994 in Hong Kong in the Under 13 event. She joined the WISPA
Professional circuit in 2000 where she won her first WISPA tournament in the Finish Open in 2000.
Since then, she has winning in many other tournaments like the Malaysia Open, Dutch Open, Tioneer Open,
Women’s Junior Squash Open, British Open and CIMB Open to maintain her number one position in the world
rankings. For her consistent performances and continual achievements, she was awarded the ‘Datukship’
award. Now, she is known as Datuk Nicol Ann David.
Many youths of Malaysia and around the world look up to her as a role model due to her admirable squash
achievements, her academic excellence and her all-round pleasing manner. Nicol showed that it is possible to
achieve victory if the mind is focused and there is a commitment to bring glory to our country, Malaysia.
